Glucosamine is a chemical compound that occurs naturally within the body and is important to the maintenance of cell structure, particularly cartilage and connective tissues. It is also recognized as a powerful anti-inflammatory. In the body, glucosamine creates a ‘cushion’ that surrounds and protects the joints from trauma. As we age the body is less able to sustain optimal glucosamine levels, leading to stiff and painful joints and the onset of osteo arthritis [i]. Glucosamine is important for maintaining the elasticity, strength, and resilience of cartilage in joints. It has been shown to not only maintain healthy cartilage but to stimulate the repair of damaged cartilage too [ii].
Glucosamine for osteoarthritis
Glucosamine is a highly recommended supplement for individuals who suffer from osteoarthritis, or are at risk of developing joint health problems. Glucosamine has been studied for its effects on joint pain, stiffness, and swelling in treating mild to moderate symptoms of osteoarthritis.
Glucosamine can come in a variety of forms, the two most common are glucosamine sulfate, and glucosamine hydrochloride. These different compounds have some similarities but they may not have the same effects when taken as supplements.
Glucosamine is an unstable compound and to be efficiently supplemented it must be stabilised before consumption. Glucosamine sulfate is stabilised with sodium chloride, or table salt. Glucosamine sulphate can contain as much as 30% sodium, and is often significantly less concentrated [iii]. The salt content of glucosamine sulphate supplements will also affect the dosage required to meet the daily recommended intake. Studies have shown that glucosamine sulphate has 74% purity, and a dosage of 2,608 mg of glucosamine sulphate is necessary to reach the same dosage of active glucosamine as 1,500 mg of glucosamine hydrochloride [iv]. With the tablets containing a higher salt to glucosamine ratio, it is necessary to take more tablets to reach the same effective dosage of glucosamine.
The less common form of glucosamine found in supplements is glucosamine hydrochloride. Glucosamine hydrochloride 99% pure glucosamine [v] and is naturally stable so does not require additives or preservatives [vi] . Glucosamine hydrochloride can provide the same benefits as glucosamine sulphate but is more efficient and does not process high sodium content. Sodium, of course, is an unhealthy additive that can have detrimental effects on your heart, arteries, kidneys, and brain.
